Followed by an outer limiting membrane formed by muller cells. The outer nuclear layer contains nuclei of rods and cones. The outer plexiform layer has processes of rods, cones, horizontal, amacrine and bipolar cells. The inner nuclear layer contains nuclei of horizontal, amacrine, bipolar and muller cells. The inner plexiform layer has intermingled neuronal processes. The ganglion cell layer consists of nuclei of large multipolar neurons. The optic nerve layer has axons of ganglion cells. Final is the inner limiting membrane separating retina from vitreous body.
